Notable Books: Stealing God's Thunder, Draw the lightning down, Conquering the electron

Be The First To Comment

On Wednesday June 10, 1752 Benjamin Franklin stepped onto an open field with a kite attached to a long copper wire. He set the kite in the wind and let it sail through the darkening skies. Attached to the copper wire was a jar filled with brass keys. Franklin had observed how the electrical discharge of two spheres resembled small lightning bolts and here he was in the field, copper wire in hand, ready to prove that lightning bolts were caused by the discharge of static electricity in the clouds. When the kite was struck the current ran down the wire and filled the jar of uncharged keys with electricity!

While this is a famous story the authors of Conquering the electron: the geniuses, visionaries, egomaniacs, and scoundrels who built ourelectronic age point out that it is difficult to document the story's veracity, especially since another erstwhile European experimenter attempting a similar  experiment died after being struck by the lightening he was attempting to harness (14). What is beyond debate is that electrical experimentation would soon change the world. From Franklin's lightening rod, which protected buildings from being set ablaze from lighting strikes, to modern communication, electricity has changed every element of human life.

You can read more about Benjamin Franklin as a scientist who emerged as an international celebrity long before he was a statesman by requesting Stealing God's Thunder:Benjamin Franklin's Lightning Rod and theInvention of America

Draw the lightning down: Benjamin Franklin andelectrical technology in the Age of Enlightenment places Franklin’s scientific work within the greater context of the history of the early study of electricity.

Conquering the electron: the geniuses, visionaries, egomaniacs, and scoundrels who built our electronic age will provide even more information about the eccentric world of electricity arcing from Franklin's day to contemporary times.

Notable eBooks: Reading Gandhi in the twenty-first century and The Impossible Indian

Be The First To Comment

On June 7, 1893 a young Indian attorney was forcibly removed from a South African train because he refused to comply with the countries strict racial segregation laws. That attorney was named Mohandas K. Gandhi and the event would spark a lifelong pursuit of social justice that resonates today. Gandhi in the twenty-first century and The Impossible Indian reassess the life and work of Gandhi for modern day readers while An Autobiography: the Story of My Experiments with Truth presents Gandhi in his own words.

Reading Gandhi in the twenty-first century  examines the resonance that Gandhi’s work has on current problems confronting the global community. The author explores Gandhi’s insights on environmentalism, terrorism, and the troubled interactions between the West and Islamic world. The author shows how his thoughts apply to both the realm of global politics and to the intimate setting of individual human interactions.

The Impossible Indian: Gandhi and the Temptation of Violence presents Gandhi as a tenacious political thinker who confronted the most violent and troubled areas of the world with a vision that transcended national agendas. The author places Gandhi in the mainstream of political discourse on topics concerning imperialism, Fascism, and civil war. The author addresses Gandhi’s belief in ethical duty and self-sovereignty endowed independently from state sponsorship. The book is intended for readers who are interested in learning more about Gandhi’s extraordinary thoughts and how they apply to current global issues of violence and human rights.

An autobiography: the story of my experiments with truth is a book written by Gandhi where he expresses his desire to seek after the truth by devoting himself to God through seeking purity in a simple life, strict dietary practices, celibacy, and a life without violence (ahimsa). This book is not a typical biography of  the author’s life, rather it is a guidebook offered to show the author’s journey of thought in practical ways that could be applied and followed by the reader.

Notable Ebooks: Tiananmen Exiles and The Non-Violence Handbook

On June 3, 1989 millions of ordinary Chinese citizens staged a nationwide peaceful protest against government corruption and totalitarian rule. The protest ended when members of the People's Liberation Army fired upon unarmed citizens. The leaders of the protest were named criminals by the government, and many chose to self-exile themselves so that they could continue to speak openly about the governmental abuses occurring in the country.

Tiananmen Exiles: Voicesof the Struggle for Democracy in China by Rowena Xiaoqing He presents an oral history of the student leaders who lead the protests. The book follows the leaders over the next twenty-six years as they continue to work for Chinese democratic reforms from outside the country.

In the Non-Violence Handbook peace activist Michael N. Nagler provides a succinct and practical guide for people interested in engaging society using non-violent techniques. The book highlights actual non-violent protests such as the one held in Tiananmen Square to demonstrate ways for safer and more effective protests. The book can also be used to help anyone with daily interpersonal relationships.
