Poetry and Art Month Book Spotlight

Emily Dickinson's poetry is at once accessible and cryptic. Her poems usually last only a few stanzas, so they are ideal for those who find it difficult to make it through pages long poetry; however, Dickinson's poetry is riddled with metaphors, strange capitalization, and peculiar punctuation, making her work a delight to pick apart and decipher. In The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson, all of her poetry is collected into one volume, allowing the reader to peruse the entirety of this enigmatic poet's life work.

Instead of looking at photography as a strict art form, Feeling Photography chooses instead to explore photography as a broad category and its relation to people's lives. The authors in this collection explore themes of grief, sexuality, colonialism, civil rights, social politics, citizenship, and school photos among other topics. Because of the personal nature of these topics, the central focus is of people and emotion, how we react to both professional and amateur photography. If you want to read about art in a meaningful context, Feeling Photography will provide excellent insight into photography's powerful effect on humanity.

Most of literary history is defined by leading figures whose style, innovation, or personality left an indelible print. In How Did Poetry Survive?: The Making of Modern American Verse, John Timberman Newcomb turns his focus on lesser known poets that made up the bulk of the modernist movement instead of focusing on the key players. In so doing, Newcomb explores American modernism broadly, showing how these poets reinvigorated poetry from its status as a stifled, highbrow art form. Modern American poets introduced poetry to the everyday by focusing on the city, the subway, and modern architecture. A few figures do not make up a movement, and Newcomb proves this with his book, giving voice to the poets who provided the foundation for others to build on to insure poetry continued on as a vibrant literary form.

Art forms sometimes come from unexpected places and are undervalued in their own time. Author David A. Ensminger explores such art and its respective culture in Visual Vitriol: The Street Art and Subcultures of the Punk and Hardcore Generation. The art from the punk and hardcore music scene comes in the forms of concert posters, flyers, and street art and allows marginalized groups in society to find a voice of resistance. Some outside of this subculture may deem the art offensive or a nuisance, but these creative endeavors are a testament to the human desire to express oneself and declare one's presence where it has been ignored.

New Texas School Administrator's Legal Digest March 2015 Available

This month's issue of Texas School Administrator's Legal Digest is the last in its print form, and, as such, it signs off with a broad look at public school as a community. The author of the article, Jim Walsh, discusses how public schools are communities and not just places in which people congregate to learn. Such an environment is rich in diversity, but is not without its share of difficulties. Walsh brings up the issue of the students' right to free speech - protected under the law but capable of causing discord in the school community. And even diversity itself can be a challenge, with students having difficulty finding a sense of belonging among their own peers. Ultimately, though, the diverse public school community must be continually supported and aided by policy makers, legislators, and neighborhoods so that young people can grow up among different people from different backgrounds and benefit from such a vibrant environment.

You can read about this topic and more in this month's issue of Texas School Administrator's Legal Digest in the UNT Dallas Library.

Many works of art and literature are often borne out of a personal or communal traumatic experience. T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land, a five part poem published in 1922, was a response to World War I, one of the most horrific wars at that time. Its disjointed narrative, allusions, and symbols reflected humanity's terror, confusion, and loss of faith in the face of advanced warfare. A stunning modernist epic rife with religious and literary references, The Waste Land remains one of the most important poetic works of the 20th century.

Allen Ginsberg's poem "Howl" embodies its title throughout the course of the text, a bombastic work that gave voice to the troubled times and people during the Cold War. In his book American Scream: Allen Ginsberg's Howl and the Making of the Beat Generation, Jonah Raskin explores the events of the time that shaped Ginsberg as well as the poet's influences like Walt Whitman and even T.S. Eliot. Raskin presents a clearer picture of the man and the poem that focuses so much on secrecy, nudity, and madness - themes that led to scorn from academics and an obscenity trial. Despite all detractors, Ginsberg's "Howl" remains a work of startling honesty and raw emotion, an important work that contributed to the development of the Beat Generation.
