New Texas School Administrator's Legal Digest March 2015 Available

This month's issue of Texas School Administrator's Legal Digest is the last in its print form, and, as such, it signs off with a broad look at public school as a community. The author of the article, Jim Walsh, discusses how public schools are communities and not just places in which people congregate to learn. Such an environment is rich in diversity, but is not without its share of difficulties. Walsh brings up the issue of the students' right to free speech - protected under the law but capable of causing discord in the school community. And even diversity itself can be a challenge, with students having difficulty finding a sense of belonging among their own peers. Ultimately, though, the diverse public school community must be continually supported and aided by policy makers, legislators, and neighborhoods so that young people can grow up among different people from different backgrounds and benefit from such a vibrant environment.
