On February 23, 1945 after a five day battle the U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division took the upper most peak of Mount Suribachi and raise the U.S. flag. While this act served as a sign that the war for the Pacific was going the Allies way, the battle lasted another thirty-one days.
During the battle nearly 900 African Americans fought. Sadly their accounts of the battle has rarely been considered. Clarence E. Willie's book African American Voices from Iwo Jima seeks to correct that omission.
